The chess we play here at GK is known as international chess. However chess has many variants. For example there is Japanese chess (shogi ),,Korean chess (chong-ki),,,Thai chess(makrook) and Indian chess (shatranj). However the most popular of these is variants is chinese chess known as (shiang-chi) and spelled xiangqi in the Pinyin spelling system, which is based upon the Mandarin dialect of chinese. Chinese chess is not merely a regional game . Unlike shogi, which is played almost exclusively in Japan and makrook ,which is played almost exclusively in Thailand, chinese chess is truly an International game.. The reason is because the Chinese are truly an International people. Chinese chess is an important part of thier culture ..And with there being in excess of a billion chinese the game is rapidly advancing in popularity . With three of the so called "four economic tigers" of Asia, namely Hong Kong,Singapore and Taiwan, are chinese . Any Chinese chess event of any consquence will have little difficulty attracting 500 to 1000 people a day.A Chinese event will get both front page coverage and probably a full page of speciallized coverage in the local Chinese newspaper.-----------In Bangkok, the Surathip Group , the national liquor company, is committed to the sponsorship of Chinese chess events . Taiwan has obtain commercial sponsorship for Chinese chess tournaments . China has been sponsoring the "SEVEN STARS CUP" series of international Chinese chess tournaments. -----------------------IT actually comes down to money . GO became a prestige game because the Japanese played it and they had money. Therefore everybody wanted to learn how to play. Its is predicted that the same will happen for chinese chess too. -------------------Chinese chess is played on a board consisting of 9 by 10 lines. It has a rook,a knight,a king and pawns, all of which move in the same way or a similiar way as in international chess. It does not have a queen.Instead ,it has a cannon,a guard ,and an elephant(sometimes called a bishop)all of which have no real equivalent in international chess. The object of the game is to checkmate the enemy king.. Chinese chess is played on lines and points rather than squares. It has a river in the middle of the board and an imperial palace on each side of the board. The king and the guards are never allowed to leave the imperial palace. there has been no formal agreement as to the names of the 7 different types of pieces in chinese chess . the westerners and chinese have several different names for many of the pieces. The Asian Chinese Chess Association,of which more than 12 countries are members ,has adopted the convention of calling the pieces by the following names ;chariot, horse.elephant, assistant, gunner, pawn and King. Instead we call them rook, knight, bishop, guard, cannon, pawn and King.-----EACH player has a total of 16 pieces of seven different types. There are 5 pawns,2 rooks,2 knights,2 bishops ,2 guards,2 cannons and one King in each of the opposing armies .. they move from one intersection of lines(called points) to another. For more info on the game and rules it is easy to look up just type in Chinese chess doing a google search . You will get all the info you will need. I personally bought this book -Chinese Chess for Begginners by Sam Sloan published by Ishi Press International Mountainview California94043 USA. library congress number 89-84155. I bought that book 2 years ago. . I learned the very basics .Played a few games with my friend that already knew the game . But she move to another state and I lost interest . Then our chess became more and more important for me to try to master. However chinese chess is both a very interesting game and can be amazingly complicated just as our chess game . It is important to note that large amounts of money are to be made by those mastering this game in the future . However as to my knowledge only the German grandmaster Robert Hubner has also attained a mastery of Chinese chess also.I am still most interested in chinese chess but can not find the time to pursue both chess roads .Just as I moved away from playing GO so did I move away from playing chinese chess. My talent was not great enough to pursue that many roads .Just the pursuit of our chess and my ambition to someday be a writer is more than enough for me. However I venture to say there are some here at GK that have that much talent and maybe even more. If so take my word chinese chess is very appealing. -BBG

Good at Chess? A Hedge Fund May Want to Hire You — Boaz Weinstein’s opening move on Wall Street came as a result of chess. Mr. Weinstein, now a star hedge fund manager, was trying to get a summer job at Goldman Sachs in 1991, when he was just 18. After being told there was nothing available, he stopped in a bathroom on the way out and ran into David F. Delucia, then the head of corporate bond trading. Mr. Delucia, who is ranked as an expert by the United States Chess Federation, had played Mr. Weinstein, ranked as a master by the chess federation, many times. He arranged for a series of interviews until Mr. Weinstein got an internship on a Goldman trading desk. Mr. Weinstein is not alone among Wall Streeters who have a chess ...

well,i know the basic alright(how to move, few combo checkmate, piece value, etc).actually, after learning a few weeks,i start beating my relatives who originally teach me.personally,i think chinese chess is more about positioning than in chess.the reason for that is because there are less attack pieces->less piece combo(also u have to consider which attack pieces u should use to fight effectively with the opponent's defensive pieces).in chess, all of the pieces(except the king of course) can either go aggressive or defensive by the player's choice.
bluebabygirl, maybe a few chinese chess games later?by the way,is GO the game that play with whte dots and black dots?

Grand Slam Masters: Both Carlsen and Anand lose — After a sensational third round of the Grand Slam Masters chess tournament at Sao Paulo, World chess champion Viswanathan Anand and World No. 1 Magnus Carlsen of Norway languished at the bottom of the points table. Anand bowed to an in-form Vassily Ivanchuk of Ukraine while Carlsen called all the shots against bottom-ranked player Vallejo Pons of Spain before blundering a piece to leave the tournament in a state of shock before the first rest day. The football points system ensured that Ivanchuk, with seven points, had a good lead over the rest of the field. Levon Aronian of Armenia was in second position with five points, Hikaru Nakamura of US and Vallejo Pons were further down ...

Who's the man? — When I was a much younger man, I saw a film titled "Who's the Man?" It was a light comedy, but throughout the movie, the two main characters would pronounce, "You the man!" to each other. In the chess world, this was never an issue. Well, not until recently. Since 1886, there was always an official World Chess Champion. The chess world always knew who "the man" was, until 1993 and the infamous Kasparov-Short match. Garry Kasparov, clearly the best chess player in the world and the World Chess Champion to boot, was to defend his title against the lesser-know British GM Nigel Short. Nigel was one of the top 10 chess players in the world, but nobody thought he could beat Kasparov. Kasparov and ...

Yes, GO is the game they play with white dots and black dots .Its a Japanese game . I personally got bored with it quickly because while there is much calculation to winning ,there is too little use of the imagination to create as there is in chess. It easy to look up the rules my doing a search on your comp.My dad plays it very good. Almost as good as he does chess. And Vo ,sorry but I will not play you any chinese chess . For the simple reason I am scared to get back into it because my learning and advancement in our chess is going so slow. I must concentrate on it for now!! However I will say that chinese chess is a fantastic game.--BBG

On Chess: World-title foes differ on workouts — In an era of 14-year-old grandmasters and Internet-nurtured chess prodigies, 43-year-old Boris Gelfand of Israel is an anomaly. After 20 years of being near the top of the chess heap, he is playing a match — his first — for the world chess championship. It will take place against the current chess champion, 41-year-old Viswanathan Anand — also one of the older set — who has played several title matches. Anand insists that a rigorous conditioning regime — including trips to the gym — is a prerequisite for success at the top level. Gelfand has a more nonchalant point of view. “It strikes me,” he recently told journalist Yuri Vasiliev, “that the basis of success is a healthy way of life. You need to ...

A Summer of Struggles Pays Dividends — Hou Yifan is the women’s world chess champion, but she is also only 17 and continues to evolve as a chess player, which should scare her rivals. Hou struggled this summer playing against mostly men. But the best way to improve is to seek out the best competition, and Hou’s trial by fire seems to be paying dividends. Last month, she dominated the first leg of the Women’s Grand Prix in Russia, a tournament that included most of the world’s best chess players. (Judit Polgar, the most skilled woman to play the game, was not there; she does not compete in women-only chess events.) Last week, Hou did it again by winning the Grand Prix’s second leg in China. Both times, she finished with ...

well,i see,no pro.i kinda think that playing both freshen up my brain though, cause i used to play like piece for piece(in chess) but if u apply the piece value to chinese chess without thinking, most of the time u ended up with better value piece but dont have an attack chance.and i think i play more aggressive in chess now than before.another reason i started another brain game is because i think i have reached my intermediate level in chess and cant improve anymore unless i start reading chess books.and im too stingie lol.

i kind of disagree.. I think there is a lot more creativity in GO than in chess.. GO is absolutely not about tactics.. you just can't calculate your way through a GO game.. chess is rich with ideas.. but GO is nothing BUT ideas.. all positional.. and a deep understanding that a grandmaster in chess must posess.. a 5 kyu GO player would need to be competitive on the amateur level.
these are just my opinions. I much prefer chess because it is so much simpler.. but I was a rather talented GO player with a rank of 3 dan
