Define long. Do you mean in terms of actual time or moves? There is a big difference.

From wikipedia,

"The longest tournament chess game ever to be played under modern time rules was Nikolić-Arsović, Belgrade 1989, which lasted for 20 hours and 15 minutes, ending in a 269-move draw.[1][2] At the time this game was played, FIDE had modified the fifty move rule to allow 100 moves to be played without a piece being captured in a rook and bishop versus rook endgame, the situation in Nikolić - Arsović. FIDE has since rescinded that modification to the rule.

The longest decisive tournament game is Fressinet-Kosteniuk, Villandry 2007, which Kosteniuk won in 237 moves.[2] The last 116 moves were a rook and bishop versus rook ending, as in Nikolić - Arsović. Fressinet could have claimed a draw under the fifty-move rule, but didn't do so since neither player was keeping score, it being a rapid chess game. Earlier in the tournament, Korchnoi had successfully invoked the rule to claim a draw against Fressinet; the arbiters overruled Fressinet's argument that Korchnoi couldn't do so without keeping score. Fressinet, apparently wanting to be consistent, didn't try to claim a draw against Kosteniuk in the same situation.[3]"

Chess: Karpov turns the screw — Karpov-Smyslov, Moscow 1972. White has come out of the opening with a certain spatial advantage. Now he has to find a plan. Warning: you're not looking for a sacrificial combination – this is Karpovian, it's all about subtlety and strategy. RB: I've nominated Karpov's Strategic Wins 1: The Making of a Champion by Tibor Karolyi (Quality Chess) for our book of the year award. It's a year-on-year account of Karpov's career from 1961 to 1985, nicely laid out and well annotated. Karpov's style is positional, unhurried and exceptionally deep. Constantly alert to the counter-stroke, he likes to make small improving moves. Some of Karpov's choices remain, even with the help of a chess computer, mysterious, as ...

Winning in long run requires motivation — Chess is a worthy pursuit for all seasons of life; 6- and 7-year-olds can play a pretty good game. In recent years, chess players in their early teens have become grandmasters. And a 20-year-old, Magnus Carlsen, is the highest-rated chess player in the world. Meanwhile, 82-year-old Viktor Korchnoi is still capable of winning tournaments, though not at the same level as before. When do chess grandmasters reach their peak? The ballpark figure used to be 35. But two chess players in their early 40s — the champion, Viswanathan Anand; and the challenger, Boris Gelfand — will face off for the world title in the summer. Gelfand embraces the age factor. He sees no decline in his ...

Chess: European Players Are Well Paid for Team Play — The difference between the game in the United States and Europe is easy to illustrate by comparing two team competitions currently under way. The European Club Cup, which ends Sunday in Slovenia, features many of the world’s best chess players, among them Boris Gelfand, Peter Svidler, Teimour Radjabov and Ruslan Ponomariov. They have no particular loyalty to their chess clubs. They are playing because they are being paid, often quite well. And the clubs with the deepest pockets, like OSG Baden Baden in Germany and Tomsk-400 in Russia, are the only ones with a legitimate chance to win the chess tournament. Compare that to the setup of the United States Chess League, which just finished its fifth week of ...

Does anybody think, if you brake that 269 move record as the world longest game would that count for something, if you broke the record on this site?

Rule change raises hopes of Vishy Anand meeting Magnus Carlsen — A change to the world chess championship candidates rules has raised hopes that India's Vishy Anand, the holder, will meet Norway's Magnus Carlsen, 20, who tops the chess rankings, in a 2012 or 2013 title match. The 2011 candidates in Kazan was settled by knock-out, where Russia's Alex Grischuk controversially made quick draws in the long classical games to reach the final via blitz tie-breaks. Subsequently, elite chess grandmasters voted for an all-play-all format. APAs were used from 1950 until 1962, when Bobby Fischer claimed that his Soviet rivals had arranged results to minimise the American's chances. The chess tournament was replaced by matches, in which Fischer famously destroyed ...

No, I doubt it very much. Especially if you are thinking that your game with tk29560 will go that long. On move 71, it was a mate in 11, even though you guys on currently on move 152.

It's half-interesting, but it's too easy to just drag games out here for it to have some real official meaning in the overall stats book.

Good at Chess? A Hedge Fund May Want to Hire You — Boaz Weinstein’s opening move on Wall Street came as a result of chess. Mr. Weinstein, now a star hedge fund manager, was trying to get a summer job at Goldman Sachs in 1991, when he was just 18. After being told there was nothing available, he stopped in a bathroom on the way out and ran into David F. Delucia, then the head of corporate bond trading. Mr. Delucia, who is ranked as an expert by the United States Chess Federation, had played Mr. Weinstein, ranked as a master by the chess federation, many times. He arranged for a series of interviews until Mr. Weinstein got an internship on a Goldman trading desk. Mr. Weinstein is not alone among Wall Streeters who have a chess ...

That must be deliberate. I'm surprised the 50 move rule has not been triggered yet. They must be trying to take advantage of each position to maximize the potential number of moves within the 50 move rule.

The game is so long that my computer slows down trying to run the script for the it. I even get a warning from Windows saying that if the script continues the computer may become unresponsive. I kept running it anyway, but didn't have the problem for too long. I just needed to wait a couple minutes.

That game appears to be on-going, but I don't see how it can continue for much longer.

I got the same warning script, but it did load in less than a minute for me. For those who can't/don't want to get the game to load:

stargirlsm vs. jeanybeany

It's on move 2167 right now. But again, completely ridiculous game. I know there was mate earlier, but going from memory, the position at move 71 was close to:

The game did not need nearly 2000 more moves, so that really takes away from it feeling like the legit winner of longest game.

I hope I'm not coming across as too arrogant. I know that some people can't mate with a rook and king vs a king. But at some point, you could just ask someone or look it up. It's one of the easier skills to learn.

50 move draw rule doesn't occur automatically. They would have to request draw manually, or ask Mike to declare it a draw.

Well, the 3rd repeat position draw rule does occur automatically.

Occasions where the 50 move rule might apply do not happen very often. Yet, it should be a simple fix. Such a fix might prevent absurd games lasting thousands of moves!

Threefold repetition rule is triggered automatically in GK, however the game will not end automatically, but the next person to move is given an option to claim the game a draw. Much like in normal OTB chess, the process is not automatic.

A game I played with conditional moves ended automatically with the threefold repetition rule. Maybe it had something to do with the conditional moves. Conditional moves are active when you have a vacation flag. If the threefold repetition occurs while I am on vacation, then I won't be around to take the option. Perhaps that is why it was automatic. (But I could have taken the option when I got back, or perhaps my opponent took the option). I expected it to happen automatically and from my perspective it did.

that ridiculous game...

Message:
without analysis, i believe it to be mate in 3 from move 71...

71... Re4 (or anywhere past the king on the 4th row)
72. Kh2 Re1 (or whatever row you're on, move to the 1st, eg Ra1, or Rb1)
73. Kh3 Rh1#

it's entirely possible that both players believe it to be drawn, and have decided to continue playing the game until one of them dies. i can remember when i first started playing chess, i thought R vs K was a draw. the first key to breaking this silly belief is knowing what the mate looks like, then forcing your opponent into the position is child's play.
