it prally is if you tell the other player you did that...
i dont think its a big deal though, as long as its not like a team wide conspiracy on the public chat board. i can def understand why people would consider it cheating.

Message: Ever since they changed the system I have been unclear on how it works for teams. There were several posts on it. I will look into it.
As far as cheating goes. Here is the text direct from the Gameknot FAQ.
Q21: What is considered cheating? How to report cheaters?
A: It's quite simple -- you can not use anything besides your own brain, and you can not consult anyone besides yourself. That includes chess programs, chess engines or chess computers, your friends, colleagues etc. etc. Chess books and game/move databases are allowed (as they are permitted in correspondence chess too). Feel free to analyze your games with chess engines or discuss them with your friends after the game is over, but not while the game is still in progress. If you suspect someone is cheating, please contact webmaster with a formal complaint. Don't forget to include specific details of why you think someone is cheating.

Message: It's weird, but I am torn over this whole thing. I play to try and get better. I tend to lose games through blunders, either mid or end game. why? books are allowed and I can find pretty much any opening and read about it and see many examples/variations. If I do this with on-line books, is it cheating?
On the other hand, when I play over the board, I admit it more difficult to be confident about a move in lines/variations I don't play often.
Gameknot, though, offers a range of tactics one can't employ over the board; for example, this guy that has kicked my butt three straight recently challenged me again in league, and it kinda frosts me. So, I take full time and research best I can time allowed to find the best move. He'll probably wipe me again. He likes the London system, which I know little about. He's also stronger in the endgame, so I would take a draw.
I like mini-tournaments to explore openings I don't like to play against or don't often get to play. Perhaps we could do a London system mini thematic? I'll do an invitational for the team if there is interest. Then we can learn as a team "within the rules."

Message: hi guys! i just joined your team (our now). i'm actually new at GK, but started rather good i think. previously i joined the "--for USSR--" team because i was born in that nonexistent country. but i'v been a member just for one day. the reason? the reason is they lost a huge number of games by timeouts. no matter how hard do you think and how much do you respect your team due if somebody is loosing by timeout. hope it is not the case here. also i would notice a good captain. he's doing well. that's why i hope we are able to go ahead. i'm gonna invite also a couple of good players to make us better in rating.
Also (it's to the captain mainly) i think we have to put some complete games (especially lost ones) to the discussion here. It would be useful.
So, nice to meet you!

Message: sup cutters, and sup to our new members: jteam, stoneghost, sosyal and the good doctor.
we had a little lull after our original bad a** win streak to open the team. but now that seems to have passed as we are back up even higher to +29, which is around 50th place on the team list. Our elo rating is even better, last I checked we were up in 34th place there. eric2004 is still undefeated, (perfect 7-0), so he wont be posting any lost games up here since he doesnt have any. In addition to eric: bunny, stoneghost and bertok are all undefeated as well so far.
In case you havent noticed, smchawk and I are well in the negatives. There is a reason for this, we agreed to take the hit in the begining with some hard games in order for the rest of you to get some easy wins. I think it worked out well so far. Some of the other teams are taking really stupid challanges against us, as a result, evylrx and cotton are taking fools down and they are tied with eric at +7. which is well above smchawk and my losses.
So keep it up guys, first person to +10 gets their name on the stone cutter wall of fame! and by that I mean the team description hahaha. peace,

Message: Good question sosyal.
I have a related observation.
I have had more than once a MUCH higher rated player playing in a regular game in which neither of us has an obvious (to me) advantage abruptly resign the game. Some of this is very obviously sandbagging, as a quick check of the stats of that player (shall I name him here???) shows that in all games he wins about 60%, but in team games he's closer to 85%. He has a high number of resignation losses in regular games to considerably lower players.
The main point is he has a substantially lower rating for team matchups than I believe he warrants.
Perhaps we could keep an internal list of players we "suspect" of sandbagging?

Message: sup cutters,
very interesting comments. sosyal, for you, and i see that you already took the dudes offer, its however you feel. If you feel like you cant beat him in one game for sure and the other one you might have a chance of beating him, then you should play them out. otherwise, its up to you really, it doesnt advance us, but it doesnt hinder us either. + i tend to try to get most of our positive points out of our lower rated players, so i usualy hope for the higher ones to at least split against their hard opponents.
rkardell: very interesting post. I always look at the other players statistics before I accept a challange, and I judge that way whether we should come out on top or not from the challange as a whole. sometimes its hard to tell from them if the player is scandalous like that, but I can definately see why heads do that. I think its a great idea to have an internal list. I you are playing someone that ends up being way way better than their rating, please message me their name so that I can not set you all up with them anymore. damn scandalous teams. Just so that you know, I am pretty good at catching that, but not great, i probably decline about 80% of all challanges that come up for us.

7/08/2004 10:33:30 Play online chess | June team update
Message: Sup cutters,
Since I am a statistics geek and I am bored at work, I went through all of our June games and compiled the stats. We did pretty well, over all we went 63-52-8, a +11 score. Very nice job everyone. I also went through each cutter individually and got their monthly scores. They are as follows:
1: stoneghost, 6-0. +6. 2: theoriginalbk, 8-3. +5. 3: cottoncandi, 6-3. +3
If you were unlucky enough to face stoneghost in June you lost.
The rest: ((smchawk: 5-8-1.)) ((eric2004: 1-0.)) ((tonyjot: 5-4.)) ((mikothedubber: 3-1)) ((elv8rx7: 5-6.)) ((rkardell: 6-6-1)) ((rhm_74: 6-6)) ((bunny69: 4-2-1)) ((bertoq: 0-2-2)) ((morrow519: 5-4)) ((thejteam: 1-5-1)) ((doctor: 1-1-2)) ((sosyal: 1-1))
My thanks to smchawk, bertoq and thejteam for taking on some really hard matches for the team. It worked though, +11 is a sweet score. If we do that every month we will be at the top of the charts in no time.
peace guys, take it easy,
