Bobby Fischer Should Bobby Fischer be extradited to the United States & brought up on charges for playing Boris Spassky in Yugoslavia in 1992? A grand jury in Washington charged him with violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

politics? although bobby did break the law...and willingly(remember his spitting on the document?), i believe that it is more politics than anything else. I would in some ways compare this to the martha stewart trial. Also he is an eay target with his anti-semitism and hate america attitude. I keep thinking of bobby acting as his own attorney...any jury would become as nutty as him:)). For that reason alone, let him be. Another factor, and perhaps the real motivation, is the case of japan bringing an army deserter from 1965 into japan from n.korea for medical treatment.
He should be deported technically, but his wife is japanese, and after almost 40 yrs....well....in the words of McCartney...let it be:)

short summary Fischer became Wolrdchampion in 1972 and disappeared after it.
Fischer received an offer to play a "re-match" vs. Spassky in 1992, location: Sveti Stefan, Yugoslavia (price-fond 3.5 Mio. US $)
In Yugoslavia was a civil war going on these days, and Yugoslavia was sanctioned by the UN and the US as well.
Fischer received a letter from the US treasure department, giving him the warning, that he would face a 10 year prison sentence, if he participated in that match.
Fischer spit on the letter and played vs. Spassky, and never entered the US again, and the USA seemed to be happy with ignoring Fischer. Fischer became even more weird than he used to be, appriciating 9-11 and so on and so forth. The US decided not to ignore Fischer any longer and revoked his passport, and he was arrested at an airport at Tokyo.
No, Fischer was not arrested for playing a chessgame, but for breaching international sanctions.
